How to read it: VPD is the "drying power" of your air — the gap between how much moisture the air is holding and how much it could hold. Low VPD (humid) eases the plant off water and pushes leafy, vegetative growth. High VPD (dry) pulls water hard and pushes tighter, generative flowering — until it goes too far and the plant closes its stomata and stalls. The bands below tell you where "on purpose" lives at each stage.

The two ways VPD steers your crop

"Crop steering" means using climate — not just genetics or nutrients — to tell the plant what to do next. VPD is your steering wheel.

Lower VPD → Vegetative

Push leafy, vegetative growth

Humid, low-drying-power air eases the plant's water stress. It relaxes, stretches, and invests in leaves and structure.

  • Larger leaf area and taller internodes
  • Faster canopy fill in early veg
  • Softer, more relaxed plant posture
  • Overdo it and you invite soft growth, weak stems, and mold-friendly humidity
Higher VPD → Generative

Push flowering, generative growth

Drier, higher-drying-power air raises transpiration and mild stress. The plant tightens up and shifts energy toward flower.

  • Tighter internodes and denser bud sites
  • Stronger flower development in bloom
  • Lower humidity that starves botrytis and powdery mildew
  • Push too far and stomata close, transpiration stalls, and growth stops

Same room, same plant. The VPD you hold decides which crop you get.

Putting it to work in three moves

Step 1

Measure at canopy height

Read temperature and humidity where the plants actually live — mid-canopy, several spots per room. A sensor by the door is measuring the door, not the crop.

Step 2

Set the stage target

Use the table to pick your center VPD for the current stage, then bias low or high depending on whether you want to steer vegetative or generative that week.

Step 3

Hold it — day and night

VPD that swings 0.4 kPa between lights-on and lights-off undoes your steering. Uniform, stable conditions across the whole room are where the gains actually come from.

The catch most rooms hit: holding VPD steady takes coordinated heating, cooling, airflow, and dehumidification working as one. Bolt-on dehumidifiers fighting a comfort-grade AC produce exactly the swings and microclimates that erase your targets. That's the difference between HVAC and engineered HVACD.

The canopy tells you when your VPD is off before the numbers do. Match the symptom to the likely cause.

Leaves cupping, tacoing, or clawing upward
Often: VPD too high
The air is pulling water faster than roots can supply it. The plant curls to cut surface area and may close stomata, stalling growth. Raise humidity or drop temperature a touch to bring VPD back into the stage band.
Soft, floppy, over-stretched growth
Often: VPD too low
Low drying power lets the plant coast. You get lush but weak vegetative growth and dangerously high humidity. Nudge VPD up with more dehumidification or airflow, especially heading into flower.
Bud rot or powdery mildew showing up late in flower
Often: VPD too low / humidity too high
Cannabis can't be sprayed clean late in bloom, so climate is the defense. Condensation and stagnant, humid pockets are where pathogens start. Hold late-flower VPD in the 1.2–1.6 range and kill the microclimates with even airflow.
Growth looks stalled even though light and feed are dialed in
Often: VPD extreme in either direction, or swinging
Both ends stop the plant — too high closes stomata, too low removes the transpiration pull. And a VPD that lurches between day and night never lets the plant settle. Check stability across the full 24-hour cycle, not just a midday snapshot.
